What we need:
We need a website which can administer a modular training program using short-term passwords for access. Student will complete the online modules before proceeding to hands-on training. Each module will include narrated PowerPoint, videos, links, and some sort of interactive discussion board, which we will develop ourselves. There will be a pre-test and a post-test -probably a short post-test after each module. We will supply all of the material we will use, the programmer will ONLY be concerned with the mechanics of the site and not the content. We will also need ongoing reliable tech support for the inevitable problems that arise over time. We plan to have the online training in place by May, xxxx.
What we do:
Birth Emergency Skills Training (B.E.S.T.) was originally published in xxxx and was taught as an online class to out-of-hospital midwives and other childbirth professionals. It evolved into a live two day workshop that is about 50% didactic (PowerPoints, lectures, and discussing concepts from the book) and 50% hands-on practice with students using models to deliver twins and breeches, manually remove placentas, suture difficult lacerations, estimate blood loss, and integrate practical experience by sharing real-life experiences with emergencies. The author, Bonnie Gruenberg, is currently writing the long-overdue second edition just as we are poised for vigorous expansion due to changes in midwifery certification standards. There is the potential for as many as 3,000 students to take our workshop every 2 years. With this edition, we will put the didactic portion online, and reshape the workshop to encompass only hands-on practice and dialogues about practical application. The student will pass the online test before attending the workshop, and BEST certification will be awarded to students that successfully complete both the online and live portions.

AHA has interactive models where the student takes control of the character on the screen and actually makes them perform actions, such as giving a medicine or providing respirations. We would NOT need anything so complicated, and we will supply all training materials which go on the site.
Where we are now:
The author, Bonnie Gruenberg, is well into writing the second edition of the book. Once she completes the first solid draft of the new book, she will be able to supply the new content for the website.
Meanwhile, we have PowerPoints, tests, and other material used in the current course which we can supply for you to use as place holders in setting up the modules. The current PowerPoints do not have voice-overs. The idea is for you to set up the modules, so that we might plug in the updated material as it becomes available.
Ideally, the author would like to be able to update the website myself without having to engage tech support. I envision many tweaks and changes over time- the medical world changes standards of care whenever a new study is published! The author has some experience with basic web design, and can handle basic updates. (she currently uses Serif Web Plus but has used other platforms in the past.)
Meanwhile, the Executive Director and head instructor of the live workshop, is establishing regional stations to facilitate workshops which are convenient for North American students. The students will complete the online training, then proceed to a local workshop to hone their hand skills.
